March 2011 Haiti Relief Efforts

The experience in Haiti was nothing like our imagination predicted. While much of the grief that has plagued the nation post-earthquake has subsided, the level of poverty is astronomic. In fact, Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere where we witnessed nearly 1.5 million people living in tent cities without clean water, and short supplies of food. We predicted poverty, We anticipated destruction and sadness; Our firsthand account was tenfold our expectations.

We landed on March 30 and immediately opened a clinic in a small 20' x 15' structure that is normally used as a school for children in the tent city. During the trip, we were able to operate two half-day clinics and one full day clinic. For the period of this short stay, were able to see, treat, and save 300 patients. We were also able to give away a large amount of toothbrushes, soaps, and lollypops to the children.

At the end of the trip we had enough supplies to donate a great portion to MediShare's Hospital, a hospital sponsored by the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine. We're hoping that such a gesture would help with our future presence and relationship with that institution.

On the last day of our trip, we traveled outside of Port au Prince to an area where the government plans to construct a new city. The Bicol Clinic Foundation can receive a free portion of this land from the Pierre Louis family to construct a small clinic, therapy center, and elementary school.

The reason why this land is interesting is due to the fact that there are ZERO non-governmental agencies (NGOs) present. This is because of several land disputes in the area and the NGOs don't want to invest in infrastructure only to find their upgrades seized by private land owners. We can avoid this confusion since we have paperwork documenting land ownership dating back for several generations. The people in this area are BADLY underserved and without proper healthcare.

Conclusion: It was a successful trip all around. We were able to see a large amount of patients, visit the prospective land location for a future clinic, and build relationships with the local officials and medical institutions.
